hotDesks and the Maryland Technology Development Corp. (TEDCO) have arranged to have Bill Bernard, the new Rural Business Innovation Initiative (RBI2) Mentor for TEDCO on the Lower Eastern Shore, to hold regular office hours at the hotDesks locations in Easton, Cambridge, Salisbury, and Pocomoke.

TEDCO’s ICE awards returned to Columbus Center in Inner Harbor on Thursday night. The Maryland agency, which provides resources for startups and other businesses, awards portfolio companies for Innovation, Corporate Excellence and Entrepreneurship.

Maryland Technology Development Corp. (TEDCO) has approved awards of $8.5 million to 29 new stem cell research projects.

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission has awarded $8.5 million to 29 projects that will explore how human stem cells can regenerate heart tissue, treat muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease, and aid diabetes management, among other medical conditions.

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission has approved awards of more than $8.5 million for companies and research institutes to address more than 20 diseases and conditions. The money will be spread among six companies and six research institutes in the state.

Five companies have received funding through the Maryland Technology Development Corporation’s (TEDCO) Seed Investment funds.

Maryland startups made waves on a national stage this week, with all four finalists at the Association of University Technology Managers business plan competition coming from the state.

Over the course of four quarterly rounds over the next year, the new Minority Business Pre-Seed fund will award up to 10 African-American entrepreneurs with an investment up to $40,000 each to test business assumptions and build prototypes for initial market testing.

State support for innovation is working. From the biotech and cyber security tax credits given to angel investors of Maryland-based companies, to the Maryland Venture Fund to TEDCO, the state has played a critical role in providing much needed funding for all stages of technology commercialization.

The key to innovation districts is to drive not only growth of favored business sectors (for Baltimore, cyber, health care, ed-tech…) but to do so in a way that includes advancement for the economically disadvantaged.
