A few months ago, I finished my first year here at TEDCO, (WOOHOO!!) and I was given the honor of writing about one of our core values. I asked myself “which of the five best describe my first year?” and one immediately came to mind as the sum of my experience: accountability!

To better understand what accountability means at TEDCO, let’s review our mission and vision. TEDCO’s mission is to “enhance economic empowerment by fostering an inclusive and entrepreneurial innovation ecosystem. Identify, invest in, and help grow technology companies in Maryland.” TEDCO’s vision is to be “the recognized national leader for supporting translational research, and technology-based, economic and entrepreneurial development while being the hub of Maryland’s innovation ecosystem.” One-way TEDCO achieves its mission and vision is through our five core values.

TEDCO defines accountability as “taking responsibility for our actions, adhering to the mission and ensuring we do the right thing throughout the organization.” From day one, TEDCO has promoted entrepreneurship within departments and held each other accountable. Each team works collaboratively and independently to achieve their daily, monthly, and yearly goals. When we need help, there is someone there. When we need ideas, there is someone ready to brainstorm. And most importantly, when we make a mistake, we own up to it and offer apologies if necessary. That is accountability.

This is not only true internally, but for the ecosystem as well. In my role as Administrative Coordinator – Board Governance, I have a responsibility to our CEO and the TEDCO Board of Directors. They rely on me to have the most accurate information regarding board-related issues and tasks, prepare them for upcoming meetings and/or events, and inform them of any changes as soon as possible.

Though it may sound like a daunting role, I welcome it. Every day is different and presents new opportunities. Ensuring I do the right thing every time is rewarding. Holding myself accountable and knowing my team will hold me accountable keeps the day running smoothly and confirms we get the job done. I am grateful for the highly efficient and dynamic team I work with; they are all examples of TEDCO’s core values in action!
